I grew up celebrating Christmas without a Christmas tree, guess it’s just not a thing for my mom. But we did have lots of food and fireworks on Christmas eve. After coming to Denmark, I’ve celebrated 6 Christmas with a real tree! And in those years, I learned and kept some rules before doing my Christmas decor shopping.
Here’s how I do my Christmas decorations shopping.
Check my previous decorations.
Yes, I did different decorating concept in the last 4 years, but I reuse my baubles. I don’t think I need to keep buying baubles of same colour if I already have them. Not unless it’s a different design. I also use same figurines every year – I guess it became a tradition seeing those on the shelves.
Know my concept/theme for the season.
I do my research, looking for fresh and simple concept online. Keeping in mind what I have in my own box, so I only need to buy few things needed and not an entire new tree decorations.
A colourful tree is nice, but it needs a very good imagination when decorating. So I’ve only done a colourful tree once. It still depends of course on how creative you are. Now, I stick to two colours – matching & mixing. This year I will be using red and gold. I bought extra baubles and planning to wrap a ribbon in our tree.
It’s the “unleashing the kid in you” feeling every Christmas decoration shopping. There are many cuuute things, but I stick to my motif!
Buy good quality of decors you can use again and again.
Sometimes it pays to buy a little bit expensive decorations. I do it every after Christmas when everything is on sale! Not only I save, I also get good quality of decorations that would look good on the tree. I don’t think they will be obsolete by the next Christmas, it will just be another concept again.
